Shenzhen Insurance Companies Compete in the Pet Insurance Market with Technological Innovation, Offering “Facial Recogni

As the pet economy continues to heat up, more and more pet owners are choosing to purchase insurance for their beloved pets, leading to rapid growth in demand for pet insurance—particularly in Shenzhen, where there is a high concentration of young people and a large pet-owning population. A reporter recently interviewed several insurance institutions and learned that, bolstered by new technologies such as AI, pet insurance is accelerating the upgrade of its coverage features, enhancing claims settlement services, and creating many innovative insurance experiences for users.
Insurance Companies Accelerate Service Upgrades

The rapid development of the pet economy has propelled pet healthcare into the spotlight as a new industry focus. Recently in Shenzhen, Ping An of China announced an upgrade to its “Cute Pet Services” comprehensive financial solution, enhancing multiple pet-related financial products. Its subsidiary, Ping An Property & Casualty Insurance, launched version 2.0 of “Pet Carefree · Love It Insurance,” which features a zero deductible, provides annual medical coverage of up to 50,000 yuan, includes pet death coverage and high-limit third-party liability insurance of 500,000 yuan, covers more than 7,000 designated hospitals nationwide, and offers practical service benefits such as annual pet checkups and imported deworming medication.

In the online insurance sector, Shenzhen-based Tencent Weibao has successively launched three products—pet medical insurance, online pet consultation and medication insurance, and pet liability insurance—to create a complete closed-loop solution for pet owners’ needs and drive innovation in the insurance service experience. “Pet owners are typically most concerned about the speed of claims settlement. We have integrated our products with the ‘WeChat Fast Claims’ service and commit to settling eligible claims within three days,” said Qi Xianhui, head of Tencent Weibao’s Claims Service Department.

Technology Empowers the Industry to Become More Standardized

Supported by a massive pet population and a large base of pet owners, pet insurance is viewed as the next “10-billion-level” blue ocean market. However, this sector still faces numerous challenges, such as low penetration rates, product homogenization, and frequent claims disputes. Nevertheless, with the empowerment of new technologies like AI, these pain points are expected to gradually improve.

For example, in pet identification, to address the industry-wide challenge of “multiple pets sharing a single policy,” nose print recognition has become one of the most widely used methods. Qi Xianhui explained that to tackle this issue, Tencent Weibao has introduced AI-powered pet nose print verification technology. “Pet owners simply need to take a clear, front-facing photo of their pet. Once the AI verifies the image, they can conveniently and hassle-free complete the claims application, significantly lowering the barrier to entry.”
Helping Shenzhen Become “Pet-Friendly”

Shenzhen is currently actively working to become a pet-friendly city, frequently introducing policies to create a more welcoming urban environment for pets and pet owners. The *Implementation Plan for Shenzhen’s Special Campaign to Boost Consumption* proposes advancing the development of pet-friendly commercial districts; meanwhile, the *Measures for Promoting High-Quality Development of Shenzhen’s Pet Industry* includes pet healthcare and smart pet products within the scope of the “20+8” strategic emerging industry clusters.

As a young and vibrant city, the post-80s, post-90s, and post-00s generations form the backbone of Shenzhen’s pet-owning population. This demographic holds more progressive consumption values and is more receptive to using insurance to mitigate pet health risks. The continued growth of the pet insurance market will further drive the overall development of the pet economy and help Shenzhen build itself into a pet-friendly city.

“Among Ping An’s 250 million users, pet owners now number 26 million. These users are relatively young and are characterized by high income and activity levels, low financial risk, and a strong sense of responsibility toward their pets,” said Fu Xin, Deputy General Manager and Chief Financial Officer of Ping An Group. “In the past, pet insurance was primarily focused on liability coverage, but medical insurance is now experiencing rapid growth. We hope to better serve this dynamic and responsible young customer base by upgrading our pet service ecosystem.”
